24 hour news television is not a public service. It is a business like any other in America. It makes its money by selling advertisements. To fill in the space between those advertisements, it creates content. That content must attract viewers, otherwise no one will see the advertisements and the business will make no money.
The best way to get viewers is to ensure that the stories that are created for content are sensational. I'm not suggesting that they are not factual (that's an entirely different conversation), but just remember that the 24 hour news station does not exist to serve you news, it exists to serve you content that is loosely defined as news.
Be careful of what conclusions you draw about the world around you and be mindful of what you decide is important to pay attention to. Not everything in the news needs your attention. And not everything in the world that needs your attention is on the news.
